Lot 2951
Constantius II, as Caesar, 324-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.51 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Ticinum. Irregular mint, after 326. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II to left. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS / P(crescent)T Camp gate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 201 (for prototype). Slightly rough and with minor weakness, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. It copies Ticinum RIC 201, but the bust is in Trier style and the camp gate has a base not seen in Arles coinage.
